Settle in for the inaugural edition of Bookish Club, as host Jess McGuire and special guest Myf Warhurst discuss Claire Keegan’s powerfully moving novel Small Things Like These.
Shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2022, Claire Keegan’s slim, understated tale of hope and quiet heroism has won a legion of fans – radio and television presenter Myf Warhurst amongst them.
Set against the backdrop of 1980s Ireland, Small Things Like These tells the story of Bill Furlong, a coal and timber merchant and happily married father of five daughters. After a series of troubling encounters at the local convent disrupts his sedate existence, his past rises to meet him – and he must reckon with the surprising complicity in institutional abuse of those around him.
Here, Warhurst joins Bookish Club host Jess McGuire for an in-depth discussion of the ideas, characters and themes that animate this work of extraordinary moral complexity. They’ll also open the conversation up to the audience, with opportunities throughout for you to share your thoughts about the book, too.
This is a catered event, with drinks and light fare to enjoy while you chat all things bookish.
Ticket holders are strongly encouraged to read Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan before attending this event so that they can contribute to the conversation in true book club fashion.
